Haleigh Horne was part of the inaugural cohort of Winston-Salem TEACH and began her first year of teaching in the fall of 2024. Originally from Virginia, Haleigh earned her Bachelor of Science from Ferrum College, with minors in Educational Studies, Psychology, and History. Through Winston-Salem TEACH, she earned her master’s degree in teaching from Salem College. She completed her year-long teaching internship at Diggs-Latham Elementary School, where she received the Best Attendance Award, Technology Integration Awards, and Comprehensive Teaching Excellence Award.
Haleigh is currently in her third year of teaching and teaches first grade at Moore Magnet Elementary School in Winston-Salem. Her experience includes teaching kindergarten and a combined kindergarten and first-grade classroom. She is especially passionate about phonics and literacy instruction. She works to build a classroom where students feel valued, develop confidence, and celebrate their progress. She also values close partnerships with families to support each child’s success. As a new member of the Moore Magnet community, she looks forward to building relationships and making meaningful memories at her new school.
One of Haleigh’s most meaningful classroom experiences involved supporting a student with selective mutism. By building trust and creating a welcoming, supportive classroom environment, she helped the student feel comfortable enough to let their voice be heard. This experience reinforced her belief that helping children feel safe, valued, and understood is essential to their growth.
Winston-Salem TEACH gave Haleigh the opportunity to pursue a teaching career that had once felt out of reach after the COVID-19 pandemic changed her career path. The program equipped her with essential tools to enter education and provided an unwavering support system.
