Julia Herman was part of the inauguaral cohort of Winston-Salem TEACH and started her first year of teaching in the fall of 2024. Julia received her Bachelor’s degree from Wake Forest University where she majored in Psychology and graduated sumna cum laude. She became a part of the WS-TEACH program and received her Master’s degree from Salem College in teaching where she was on the Dean’s list. At the end of her year-long teaching internship at Petree Elementary, she received the Winston-Salem TEACH award for adaptability.

Julia is currently a third year teacher at Old Town Elementary where she teaches 3rd grade. Julia is passionate about bringing out the best version of her students.

Reflecting on her experience at Old Town, she shares:
“My favorite part about teaching at Old Town is seeing how much the students grow each year, both academically and as individuals. I hold my students to high expectations, and I enjoy watching them rise to meet me there over the course of the year. I’ve made incredible relationships with my students. It’s been special to see my first class of third graders grow up to be fifth graders who still want to give me hugs and waves any time they see me in the halls. One moment that has stuck with me in particular was when a current fifth grader gave me a card that read “‘give this to a staff member who makes you feel safe.’ I was honored to be that person for her.”

Julia’s greatest classroom accomplishment is having 100% math proficiency based on the 3rd grade EOG in the 2025-2026 school year. She also is one of the three staff members in charge of the school talent show, and enjoys fostering the love of performing across all grade levels. Julia is also a WSFCS Teacher of Promise nominee.

Winston-Salem TEACH has helped Julia understand how best to work with all sorts of children with a variety of needs and backgrounds. She appreciates the guidance of those involved in the program and the connections she’s made since being a part of it.
