Kyla Dove was part of the second cohort of Winston-Salem TEACH and began her teaching journey as an Exceptional Children (EC) Resource Teacher at Moore Magnet Elementary School in Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools. Through the Winston-Salem TEACH program, Kyla continued developing her skills and knowledge in special education while gaining hands-on experience supporting students with diverse academic, behavioral, and social-emotional needs.

Kyla is currently in her second year of teaching at Moore Magnet Elementary School, where she provides specially designed instruction in reading, writing, math, and social-emotional learning. She is passionate about advocating for students with disabilities, building meaningful relationships, and creating an environment where every student feels understood, supported, and capable of success. Her dedication to education has also led her to serve as a Winston-Salem TEACH Leadership Fellow, where she has the opportunity to support and mentor future educators.

Reflecting on her experience at Moore Magnet Elementary School, Kyla shares:

“One of the most rewarding parts of being an EC teacher is watching my students make progress, especially when they accomplish something they once believed they couldn’t do. I work with students who have different learning styles, abilities, and challenges, and I believe every student deserves someone who is patient, understanding, and willing to advocate for them.

For me, teaching is about more than academics. It is about building relationships, helping students learn how to manage their emotions, celebrating the small victories, and making sure they know their voices matter. Some days are challenging, but seeing a student grow academically, socially, or emotionally reminds me why I chose this profession. My goal is to create a safe and supportive learning environment where my students feel comfortable being themselves and know that I will continue to believe in them, even on their hardest days.

I also want to make a difference beyond my classroom. I believe collaboration with families, teachers, and other school staff is important in making sure students receive the support they need. As I continue growing as an educator, I want to become a stronger advocate and leader in special education while encouraging other educators to recognize the potential in every student.”

Of the Winston-Salem TEACH program, Kyla states:

“Winston-Salem TEACH has played an important role in my journey as an educator. The program has challenged me to grow professionally and personally while providing me with the support, resources, and relationships needed to become a more confident teacher. Being an EC teacher comes with many responsibilities, and having people who understand the challenges and are willing to guide and encourage you makes a difference.

One thing I appreciate most about Winston-Salem TEACH is that the support does not stop once you enter the classroom. The program continues to invest in us as educators and provides opportunities for us to grow as leaders. Being selected as a Leadership Fellow has been especially meaningful because I now have the opportunity to encourage and support other aspiring teachers who are beginning the same journey I once started.

Winston-Salem TEACH has helped me see that my impact can go beyond the students I teach each day. I want to continue growing in special education, expanding my knowledge of behavior and student support, and eventually taking on leadership opportunities where I can advocate for students, families, and educators. I am grateful for the opportunities this program has given me, and I hope to continue making a positive difference in the lives of the students and teachers I encounter.”
